Michael Swan's Practical English Usage

Dear English Teachers,

What other grammar books (organized similar to this one, ie with their entries arranged in alphabetical order, regardless of which specific part of grammar the given entry relates to) can you recommend?
Michael Swan is a British writer (afaik). Are his books/works well-known/popular in the US?
Could you name some of Michael Swan's "counterparts" in North America (meaning the authors whose books for English learners are especially popular in North A.)?

Michael Swan's is the best of the lot and is suitable for both sides of the Atlantic. Any others that have come to hand I have browsed through but eventually discarded. I am American and use Swan's.
