Metaphor/parable

What's the difference between these two words?
I checked out some dictionaries and they indicated that parable could mean anything from the Bible that evoke the stories told by Jesus, but I vividly remember people using these words to mean a figurative expression or even an actual object that has a hidden meaning that refers to something else.

A parable is a story. A metaphor is generally a phrase or sentence at most (e.g. He is a pig).
