I think both are metaphors. (But I think the second one isn't grammatically correct.) And can you have sheets of flame? (confused emoticon)

Just my two cents though.

I agree with Philip.

When you say something 'seems to be', it is a lot weaker than saying it 'is'--even if what follow the 'seems to be' is a string of metaphors. 'Seemed to be' is equivalent to 'seemed like', making the comparison a simile.

(What appears as a grammatical error is the omission of 'be' in 'seemed to splitting': seemed to be splitting

DavkettAnd, 'sheets of flame' might be nothing more than a purely descriptive reference to 'sheet lightning'.

I had difficulty understanding the simile, but I see that you have a much more active imagination than I do. Thanks for your probably correct interpretation.

Hi Philip,

The same active imagination can also get me into trouble.

Can any of you give me an example of a teacher as a metaphor?

Thanks!

Example of a metaphor:

All the world's a stage.

Example of a simile:

The world is like a stage.

I'm sure you can find a metaphor for teachers.

Easy!

A good teacher is a student's key to success.

Actually that's even a double metaphor!
