what is a good metaphor to descibe keeping a close eye on something ?

I had the same reaction as Mr Wordy did. I immediately thought of "to watch like a hawk", but then I noticed that you wanted a metaphor, and this is a simile, not a metaphor.

You realize, I hope, that "keep a close eye on" is already a metaphor! :-)
