Although it isn't part of my active speech, I believe I have heard "met with an accident". Have any other natives heard it?

I was taught 'met with an accident' BUT NOT 'met an accident'.

I hear "met with an accident" too, but it is very rare. The most common expression is "have an accident".

"Met an accident" rings incorrect to my native ears. "Met with an accident" rings correct. However, it has a stilted quality to it and would normally be used in order to add a tinge of "unfortunateness" or sarcasm or something else to the statement.

E.g., "What happened to Paul?" "He, how shall I say this, met with an accident."

Hi,
Yes, 'met with an accident' sounds fine to me, although a little stiff.
