Messing around

So I told him to get the .... out of there. At first he thought I was joking, but then he ran. He could tell I wasn't messing around.

Does wasn't messing around in the sentence mean that he could tell that he was being dead serious and not joking? If not, what else could I use that might sound young and street?

Top answer

Yes—'messing around' does mean that. I'm neither young nor street, so I'll pass on that one.
