Mess in a dress

Hi;

So there's this song called "According To You" by Orianthi and one part goes:

I'm a mess in a dress, can't show up on time
Even if it would save my life

At first I thought it's just a joking way of saying she's a rather clumsy female, throwing things everywhere, scatter-brained and whatnot. But then I thought maybe it's more literal, like she doesn't look good in a dress or something. For those who don't want to read the full lyrics, the song basically shows a girl being mistreated by her boyfriend in a way that he thinks she sucks and sees only bad things about her, while some other guy loves her just the way she is. So which of the two is the correct meaning? Thanks.

Pop song lyrics are often written with a "yeah, that rhymes ... that'll do" kind of approach, so I doubt as much thought went into the exact meaning as you are seeking. Even if it did, there's no way of knowing, short of asking the person who wrote the lyrics.

  • Failing that, your idea of what it means is probably as good as anyone's.
