mention vs refer to

Hi. Please explain the difference between together "mention " and "refer to".

Hi,

Let me illustrate the broad idea with these examples.

I had a conversation with Tom yesterday.

eg Tom mentioned Fred.
He spoke about Fred casually. Our conversation was not really about Fred.

eg Tom referred to Mary.
Sounds like he wanted to tell me something about Mary.

Since a lot of what we say is casual, 'mention' is the more common term.
