Mental illness/a mental illness

Hello,

Do the sentences below sound natural?

- He was diagnosed with mental illness/He was diagnosed with a metal illness.

Since "mental illness" can be both countable and uncountable, I wonder if both of the sentences sound okay.

Thank you.
