Vocabulary

Mend/repair

Hello,

I'd like to ask you, which is more common, especially in BrE:
to mend or to repair a roof, to mend or to repair a light?

Thank you

(Note I'm an American, but I did live in England for a year) I'd use repair in both cases. I'd only use mend in reference to healing the body (ex. mending a wound), or in an abstract sense (mend a bad situation).

  • I don't remember it being used any differently in England.
  • Hope this helps.

Thank you, Clive. I'm wondering, of these three: fix, mend, repair, which is your first choice for the light?
