Men of letter?

Hi,

I know that a male member of the clergy can be referred to as a man of the cloth, while a marshal probably can be referred to as a man of law.
How about a philosopher? Can I refer to him as "a man of letter"?

Thanks in advance, AL

Top answer

A man of letters is a scholar or serious writer. A philosopher would be among those, but the term does not refer to philosophers alone.

No 'man of...', but 'a thinker' might work.
