Memory Work

When I was a child, I attended a parochial elementary school. Each week we had memory work; we were to memorize some section of the Bible or other Christian writings.

Later, we memorized sections of the US Constitution, notable poems, and famous speeches.

I have never assigned memory work for my students, but I think it might be an interesting proposition. Where would I begin? What would be a text worth memorizing for an ESL student?

It seems to me that every time I ever took a course in a foreign language, we had to memorize entire conversations (dialogs) at least one a week, and be prepared to perform either part in class. It was very helpful, I thought. But I have the feeling that maybe that's not the kind of thing you're talking about.

Yeah, I'm thinking of a poem or something more famous.
