Memory built up

Hi

When you have a neurosis you tend to repeat the same pattern in your life, or do the same action, as if there's a memory built up and the thing is stuck with that.

I'm not sure I understand that last part of the sentence. I take it to mean that the memory is kind of closed and nothing can get out of it?
Is there a better way to same the same?
