MEMORIZE vs REMEMBER

Hi,

I corrected a friend's fb status saying "Life is about memories, make everyone of those worth memorizing" to "Life is about memories, make every one worth remembering."

Of course, he argued and said they're the same thing as they are synonyms. I know "remembering" is a better fit but I don't know how to explain it. Help me?
