Melt

Can we use "melting" to refer to the washing away of soap or sand or is it used only to refer to the liquefaction of a solid due to heat ?

I've never come across that usage of it. Some people use 'melt' incorrectly when they mean 'dissolve'. [Oh, come on!

You would use rinsing in this case. Melting doesn't always require heat in langause terms as Philips pointed out.

The soap was rinsed way.

I am rinsing the sand off my feet.

Washing away is fine but sometimes gets confusing when having soap as an example so rinsing would be best.

Melting is almost always used to say something is turning from solid to liquid.

I would say that the soap is eroding. Dissolving or "being used up" would both be better than melting.
