Mei Lang, a baby panda
The youngest baby panda in the is named Mei Lan. It means “Atlanta Beauty”.
Mei Lan was born on September 6, 2006, weighing about 0.25 pounds. Now Mei Lan weighs about 12 pounds! She is the fifth giant panda born in an American zoo in the last six years.
Last week, Mei Lan stood up on her own. She should be walking later this month or in early January. Soon after Mei Lan takes her first steps, the public will be able to meet her. Until then, people can see Mei Lan and her mother, Lun Lun, through the zoo’s webcam or in a video.
The father, Yang Yang, can’t live together with the mother and the baby.
