What is the difference between these two sentences?

Let's meet somewhere.
Lert's meet up somewhere.

Meet up means the same as meet. When he was in the supermarket, he met up with a buddy he had at Oxford... They met up in 1956, when they were both young schoolboys.

I would be more likely to use met up if I was talking about a planned meeting between people who know one another. I wouldn't use it to describe a first encounter. Met could be used for any meeting.
