meet or discover or encounter

If I had ( ) a book like this, my life would have changed.

What word (other than "read") would you put in the blank?
Is "meet", "discover", or "encounter" available?

BTW
"my life would have changed" can be
"I would have lived a different life." or
"my life would be different now"?

Met, discovered, encountered, found would all work in place of read . By the way: all are grammatically okay, but I think could might be more appropriate.
