"Pentagon intrigued by battlefield robots that feed on human flesh"
http://tinyurl.com/n8cnu9 (National Post article)
"Fox News rather blandly reports that "a Maryland company under contract to the Pentagon is working on a steam-powered robot that would fuel itself by gobbling up whatever organic material it can find ? grass, wood, old furniture, even dead bodies."
[nq:1]From Fox ?biomass? and ?other organically-based energy sources? wouldn?t necessarily be limited to plant material ? animal and human corpses contain plenty of energy, and they?d be plentiful in a war zone."[/nq]
The Project is financed by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency).
Some articles mentioned that it would have the ability to chop up its "fuel". Which I found a tad gruesome.
But then the next day the company that's developing it insisted that it's strictly "vegetarian", not because it has to be, but because they told it: "Eating flesh is a no-no." They want us to believe that this thing nibbles the odd twig here and there and is essentially cute and cuddly.
Fox made sure they let everyone know that they made a boo-boo and retitled their article "Biomass-Eating Military Robot Is a Vegetarian, Company Says".
So which is it? A carrion eating battle-machine or a shy little doe- like creature that hides out in the woods? (Personally I don't think the Pentagon is interested in developing a herd of mechanical deer but that's just me.)
After EATR got its image makeover one blogger had this to say: "If one is munching the grass on your front lawn, you might want to get the kids inside the house anyway."
