Hi there !

Would you please tell me what does the part in bold means :

I have reckoned upon a medium that a child just born will weigh 12 pounds , and in a solar year , if tolerably nursed , increaseth to 28 pounds .

It's not very good English. I have decided that, on average, a child... (I don't know of any child who was ever born at 12 pounds, and even 10 pounds in considered an enormous newborn.

(I don't know of any child who was ever born at 12 pounds, and even 10 pounds in considered an enormous newborn. I also think that 28 pounds is a bit high for an average one-year-old. But then, maybe this isn't on Earth.)

Oh, yes, "calculated" is much better than "decided," though I had meant to write "determined" instead of "decided."

And he wasn't talking about normal human babies -- I'm very relieved to realize that.
