Medical Writing for Clinical Trials

Question

Hi,I am an American ESL teacher with a student interested in improving his medical writing.  He is interested in submitting a research article on several clinical trials to US journals, but needs help with writing up his work.  Does anyone know of good resources for working with a student that has this goal in mind?  Thanks,Mike

try starting with the journal where he intends sending his manuscript to see how they want him to do it. Then imitate the style. Remind him about structuring his publication clearly in the IMRAD format, about acknowledgements and stating who did what and about plagiarism .

The editors will hang him about the citations format- if he gets past peer review.

How come he is writing a paper alone, in these days of multi-centre RCTs ?

Hi,

Your best option would be to find your student someone who is trained in medical writing who can act as an editor of the paper. There are many medically trained professionals who also could be of help for whom English is a first language. I personally teach at a school that specializes in preparing International medical professionals for Medical English (we teach terminology and clinical skills); we also prepare students for examinations such as the Medical Council of Canada licensing exams and the USMLE. If he would be interested in having someone like myself edit his articles, he can contact me. Hope this is helpful.

For a student WHO has this in mind, (not THAT)

one of the best resources, if he can pay, is a GOOD medical editor/transcriptionist (like me). He can dictate and a transcriptionist will transcribe. The best way to find one is word of mouth - there are lots of horrible transcriptionists out there who don't know grammar and don't know medicine. Then again, there are many who know both. There are many foreign (India and the Carribean) transcriptionists who are not well trained and lack basic skills. I taught college English and transcription, and am married to a doctor. you could maybe also put an ad in the American Association of Medical Writers monthly newsletter - google it. Or ask at your local hospital's transcription department - if they still have one in-house - many no longer do.

"someone like ME edit his articles!" NOT "someone like MYSELF"! The usage of MYSELF is incorrect there, and in ALMOST every other instance in which it is (over)used in this crazy language.

Note: all these are wrong:

The surgery was done by myself.

He gave it the books to Dr. Smith and myself.

If you would mention it to either Diana or myself next week, we would appreciate it.

only theses sorts of usages are correct:

I myself went to get the paper. (note you cannot substitute "me")

I went to the movies last night by myself. (note you cannot substitute "me")
