Hello ,

What is the difference between "media" and "medium" in context of communication?

e.g

UTP cables is used as media or medium for transmitting data.

Marius is correct that medium is the singular and media is the plural, but many Americans don't realize that and simply refer to ANY medium as "the media." So you'll find the words used interchangeably.

Yes, that's true when speaking of the news media.

But in non-news contexts, singular and plural should be adhered to.

eg the cable is the computer's medium of communication with the printer.

eg email and Canada Post are two different mediums of communication. (note that 'media' is less used as the plural form in this type of context.)
