mechanism

Is this correct? I've never heard mechanism used like this.

However, in a redshirt year, student athletes may attend classes at the college or university, practice with an athletic team, and dress for play but may not compete in games. Using this mechanism, a student athlete has up to five academic years to use the four years of eligibility, thus becoming a fifth-year senior.

Thank you

This was found on wikipedia. Is it not reliable in terms of grammar?

Would process be the best to use?
Thanks

It's not a matter of grammar. It's matter of vocabulary.

I'd call it a rule, and say 'Under this rule . . '.
