measurement expression

hello, i have a question about measurement:

"The Sinai peninsula measures approximately 150 miles across at the top and 260 miles along the sides."

what does it mean by "260 miles along the sides"? is it length or width? thank you!

Top answer

A peninsula is an area of land that is surrounded by water on three sides, so what I understand is that '260 miles along the sides' means that, apart from the top which measures150 miles in width, each of the two remaining sides measure 260 miles in lenght and not across their banks.

If you search for an image of the Sinai Peninsula on Google or on Wikipedia, you'll see that its land formation has a shape roughly resembling an isosceles triangle, with its base at the top and two sides of equal length meeting at a point at the bottom.

The top (where our triangle base is) is 150 miles long and each of its sides that meet at a point at the bottom is roughly 260 m

Yes, it is indeed an isosceles triangle. I checked on Google. Therefore, it must refer to two equal sides of the Sinai peninsula.
