Here's a use of "meanwhile."

Jim was packing the car with the beach supplies. Meanwhile, Janet was preparing their huge picnic lunch.

On checking my dictionary:
meanwhile = during the same period
while = (1) during or in the time that
(2) even though

Your example fits well with the definition. What does while mean in the context of my example?
