Means to you?

Hi! everyone.
Could you tell me how are we supposed to answer this question?I mean what are we expected to answer when someone asks us-"What does something mean to you?" Is it like asking someone "Are you familiar with this thing"? or is it like asking "How important this thing is to you" ? I can't understand the real meaning of this(coloured) question?
Thanks!

It can have either of these meanings, depending ion the context.
