Anon, you've asked this question before. If there is more than one method of traveling, use "are" and if there is only one, then use "is."

If the only way to travel is via camel, you may say "The means of transportation wasn't very comfortable." If you could go by camel, donkey, racecar, or tractor, you can say that the means of transportation are varied in their speed and comfort.
