Meaningful/purposeful

The doctors had assessed that it no longer would be meaningful/purposeful for him to go on with the kemo therapy.

Is assessed the word you would choose in this context?

Is meaningful and purposeful interchangeable in this sentence? And do they work as I intend or would you prefer a different word?
