If I later say "I had no choice" i'm guessing it's best to say "In an instant, I knew that I would be forced to play in a group of talented musicians who all had better instruments than me"? As opposed to saying "either be exposed as a fraud" OR "or have to leave" in this sentence?
Not sure if the fraud thing works as I say earlier in the piece that I'm a fraud because I mime, and I couldn't mime in the wind band as I was the only brass player there...
I reluctantly pursed my lips, placed them on my mouthpiece, and played. It wasn't my best performance, but I had no choice. The shame of playing nothing would have been greater than that of failing to play well.
