Meaning of word

"The formation of the subway train: 6-car permanently mated articulated sets"

What is the meaning of mate here? I guess it means join. But if it really means join, what is the precise meaning of mate in this context in simple terms? And also what is the meaning of sets here? Is it the obvious?

Thanks so much.
