Meaning of "What was the reason for you to take up the job?"

What was the reason for you to take up the job?

I know this sentence sounds a bit off, but I just want to know what this sentence means.

Does this sentence mean

  1. "What was the reason that you took up the job?" (If "you" really took up the job in the past)
  2. "What was the reason that you were going to take up the job?" (If "you" didn't take the job in the past)

Can it mean either of them according to context?
