Test Site represents a challenging experiment premised on dangerous play. Like the risk-taking adventures of childhood it offers itself as a means of testing the ground of your place in the world – of determining the kind of person you wish or dare to be – beginning with the fundamental, yea or nay-saying question of whether to take part or observe: are you a performer or spectator in your everyday life? But the artwork was also an experiment for the artist to see whether such fun slides could feasibly be adapted and integrated into the urban landscape as functional modes of conveying members of the public.A kind of prototype, then, which, if it worked successfully, could serve as a fantastic advertisement for the proposal. As it happens, Holler had already tried out such slides in several real contexts – a small office block in Milan had one in an enclosed courtyard, involving minimal use – but the Turbine Hall installation effectively afforded the possibility of seeing whether it was viable with a mass public on a large scale, and the accompanying catalogue provided several hypothetical instances of its application in London sites, as well as a full-blown feasibility study for a comprehensive implementation of Stratford town centre in east London. The intriguing point about a potential development such as this, between artwork and urban functionality, is the way participatory play, incorporating members of the public, becomes the inherent motor for a radical shift in the culture around pedestrian mobility in the city. As such the artwork’s twin, democratising premises of participants engaging in a process of risk- and responsibility-taking, as a prerequisite of its functioning, stand to become absorbed productively into public spatial practices.
