Meaning of "to this extent"

While I was writing an essay I wanted to express that today job competition is far higher than in the past. In order to to achieve that, I used "this extent" to mention the current level of competition. Therefore, I would really appreciate it if someone could let me know whether the usage of "to this extent" is correct or not.
