Hi, What is the meaning of to the safety of in the following text?
"Eighteen" asked the auctioneer.
"Ye, "Carl said, loud enough for many to hear. Pete Flint retreated to the safety of his unspent cash and watched in an amusement as the great Carl finished off a lousy deal.
Please note that in the context Flint is the rival of Carl in the auction.
