To ensure abundant harvests, the Aztecs offered payment to their gods in the form of human blood. Though they were performed for the common good, Aztec bloodletting and human sacrifice rituals were astonishingly gory. Accounts of the ceremonies included descriptions of tongues getting pierced, hearts taken from chests and flesh removed from bodies. As barbaric as this sounds, it should be remembered that many other ancient civilizations practiced human sacrifice.
