Meaning of this idiom/pharse

What does it mean to look past someone? Here's the context:
As Mai explained why she had to break their date, she noticed Luke looking past her. Turning, she saw Meg smiling--at Luke.
Does it mean (in this context) that this Luke person was ignoring or not paying any attention to her and was looking at Meg, instead? Please, explain it to me.
