Meaning of this George Ade quote

Hi all,

Could someone tell me the meaning of this famous George Ade quote "Anybody can win -- unless there happens to be a second entry". Thanks in advance.

It seems pretty straightforward to me, Aravindr: If there is no other competitor, it is easy to win, but it is more difficult to do so if one faces competition.

In reading Ade's Autobiography and biography, it would seem to me that he was referring to the fact that he applied to the County for a scholarship for a college education. He happened to be the only person in the county that applied, therefore he won it.
That's my take on it. Hope this helps!
