Meaning of " this break from the past"

Hi teachers,

This is an excerpt from the news, where some citizens were hauling bottles, and fighting with police.

" I would urge the people to reject violence, to give this break from the past a chance to work, and the US is prepared to help."

What's the meaning of the bolded? Thanks.

Regards,

Tinanam
