Hi~ what do you think the meaning of "then" is in this context?

Is it correct usage to use the word here? Because I don't understand why it is used here...so if you have any idea, please let me know that. Thank you for your help~

An abnormal dopamine response pattern complicates the ability to engage
consistently in healthy behaviors. Most replacement behaviors taught by
schools often do not trigger dopamine reinforcement (e.g., counting to 10
when angry). The chemical definition of depression is any life event that
produces a dramatic shift in the brain’s natural secretion patterns. This
is why most crisis situations consistently produce some level of depression.
Consider students who lack healthy dopamine response patterns
and engage in high-risk behavior, such as kicking adults whenever angry.
Since the behavior is a response to anger they are feeling, dopamine is
activated to aid in their recovery from pain. The students are then taught
to count to 10 when angry as a replacement behavior to kicking.
