Meaning of the word "these"

Bentham, however, believed that the rightness or wrongness of what we do comes down to the likely results. These can differ according to circumstances. Lying isn’t necessarily always wrong. There might be times when telling a lie is the right thing to do.


What does the word "these" refer to? I think it refers to "results", is it right?
