Meaning of the sentence

Hi there!

I’ve struggled with understanding a sentence, expecially meaning of the one part of it:

Alexander the Great conquered the ancient world in far less time then it took two countries that claim his mantle to agree on a name for one of them. ,that claim his mantle’ What does it mean in that context?
