meaning of the sentence

Dear Teacher,

I have met the sentence in a novel:

..., but the sides and back of the building were flat and unadorned, as though the architect had applied a Mediterranean veneer to a plain plywood box, adding a lip of red tile at the top to suggest an entire roof when there was none.

Please explain the meaning of all the sentence in simple English, especially as though...

Thanks in advance.

Does this help? (I don't know what a 'Mediterranean veneer/surface' is-- some sort of plaster, perhaps, that is used on Greek, Italian or Spanish houses.)
