Meaning of "the film seemed tied to us in so many knots"?

Hello everyone. I am reading a novel, and I came across this expression. Could you please let me know its meaning?

[Clara speaking] “Then tell me something I want to hear.”

The privilege of drivers: to say the boldest things without ever looking at you.

[The protagonist speaking] “Like what?”

[Clara speaking] “Like I’m sure you can think of something.”

Did I get where she was going with this? Or was I just imagining?

[The protagonist speaking] “Like walking you home last night and hoping to think of one more way to avoid saying goodbye because there was still so much to say? Like not knowing why the film seemed tied to us in so many knots? Like wanting everything all over again? Like that?”

- André Aciman, Eight White Nights, Third Night

This is a novel published in the United States of America in 2010. This novel is narrated by the nameless male protagonist who meets Clara at a Christmas party in Manhattan. Two days after the party, Clara came to the protagonist's house in the morning and is now driving him to her best friend's house.

In this part, I wonder what the underlined expression means.

I am vaguely guessing that it might mean that he felt as if the film was related to them ("tied to us") in so many ways ("in so many knots"), but I am not sure what it exactly means...

Thank you very much for your help. Emotion: smile

The film probably had a story that was similar in some (or many) ways to their own personal story. The use of "knots" may be an allusion to "complications" if they have a complicated relationship according to the story you're reading. CJ
