Meaning of "The Drill"

Hi,

I would like to know the meaning of the "drill" which I found in a book.

"The hookers can smell a new desk clerk from down the block, but I know the drill.

Thank you in advance,

Sometimes "the drill" can refer to a [meaningless] routine which is required if one is going to [be allowed to] play the game. It's usually something you'd prefer not to do. It's a cynical remark.
