Meaning of 'sweet' here?

Please guide me in the meaning of "sweet stale odor" here. I don't think that it means a sugary taste heare. May it mean a bad odor?

“There was a sweet stale odor in the car and there did not seem enough air to breathe freely. Tarwater could see a pale reflection of himself, eyeing him darkly from the window.”

Thank you

But what bad odor? Cloying?

Maybe something fermenting? You'd need to give me more context to guess.

I'm guessing this is taken from a story. As a consolation, the speaker doesn't know himself what it is that causes the odor, at least that's what the author wants to get across. This is why the author is just describing the odor's attributes instead of saying "There was the (sweet stale) odor of ___ in the car".

After these sentences the driver offers some cigaret and whiskey to the boy.
