What does the following sentence mean:

"I spread a map across the sunken living room of our co-op apartment"

I lived in a co-op when I was a graduate student in Canada. The organisation owned a group of townhouses, and the students lived upstairs in the bedrooms. Each paid for the space they occupied - there were some private bedrooms, and some shared. The houses were segregated. There were a couple for guys and a couple for women.
