Did you look under "strand"?
"Stranded" means left with no way to get where one wants to go. If a ship sinks and you make your way to an island with no people, no phone, no radio transmitter, and no airport, you're stranded.

If no one picks you up at the airport and it's so late that the buses and taxis aren't running anymore, you're stranded. People who don't want to pay for a taxi might consider themselves stranded even if the taxis are still available.
If you run out of money and your car breaks down and you can't walk home and are unwilling to hitchhike, you're stranded.

If you're surrounded by flood waters and have no boat, you're stranded. If you're surrounded by snow or woods and don't have the strength to get out, you're stranded. Maybe you broke your leg.

[nq:1]Did you look under "strand"? "Stranded" means left with no way to get where one wants to go. If a ... by snow or woods and don't have the strength to get out, you're stranded. Maybe you broke your leg. Etc.[/nq]
If white castles queenside, and black plays ...Bxa2, white can play b3 and the bishop is stranded.

Strand is an old word for a seashore:
so a stranded boat is a boat aground,
stuck on the seashore, and a stranded
person is someone isolated from help
as if alone on the seashore, like a
stranded boat.

[nq:1]Strand is an old word for a seashore: so a stranded boat is a boat aground, stuck on the seashore, and a stranded person is someone isolated from help as if alone on the seashore, like a stranded boat.[/nq]
It's normally applied to the seashore, but I think by extension it may once have referred to any tidal setting. ("The Srand" in London was the road which ran along the Thames; beyond this were private grounds which ran down to the tidal river, interrupted by narrow lanes leading to public river stairs and landing-places.)
