Meaning of so here

They delve into treatment and so begins the most remarkable relationship between two men.

Hi, I understand its application, but can someone please explain its meaning here and the way it fits in the sentence?

Does it mean 'therefore' or 'consequently', with a simple inversion?

and consequently the most remarkable relationship beings between two men.

Thanks

Hi,
