Meaning of shot stiff

What's the meaning of shot in shot stiff in the following passage? Thanks so much.

"Come morning, however, when Samson went outside to look at the goats he found them lying on their backs, legs shot stiff to the sky with rigor mortis, dead as stones."

" In this case, the joints would be fully extended, so that each leg was straight (not bent), and with the animals lying on their backs, the legs would be pointing vertically, or straight up toward the sky. "Shot" is a strange choice here. "Projecting" and "shot" can imply motion.

  • "Projecting" and "shot" can imply motion.
  • If you "shoot out your arm," you extend it straight outward in a single energetic move.
  • Obviously, Samson didn't see any such move, but the description implies that such a move might have taken place earlier.
