Meaning of sentence

What does it mean by "He pleaded guilty"?
Does it mean that he was innocent or he committed crime and was feeling guilty?

Top answer

The defendent must formally state whether he considers himself to be innocent or guilty of the crime. This defendent said he did it. He is not necessarily feeling guilty-- he may be glad that he stole his boss's Jaguar and went for a joyride.

  • Or he may be mistaken-- he may really be innocent but thinks he did it (perhaps he had overindulged in aloholic beverages and cannot quite recall the details).
  • In either case, he has pleaded guilty-- he has formally stated before the court that he considers himself guilty of the crime.

Hello Guest

It means he was charged with some kind of crime, misdemeanour, felony, etc., and said in court that he had indeed committed it.

Usually you would infer from a plea of 'guilty' that the person had committed the crime.

But sometimes people plead guilty to crimes they haven't committed; or plead guilty to a lesser crime to avoid punishment for a greater one

It means the defendant was not stuborn to say no to the charges on him. He simply accepts the allegations.

Many thanks to both of you Mr. Micawber & MrP for clearing my confusion.
